About CMN Ambassador - Sarah

I was born with a giant congenital melanocytic nevus (GCMN) covering a significant part of my body. Growing up with a rare and visible condition shaped many parts of my life, from how I saw my body and my confidence to how comfortable I felt being seen by others.

For most of my life, my nevus was simply something I learned to live with and accept as part of me. As an adult, however, my journey took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with melanoma. Something I had lived with since birth suddenly became part of a much more serious medical journey.

Living with GCMN has taught me that its impact goes far beyond the skin. There are medical considerations, but there are also deeply human experiences involving body image, confidence, fear, acceptance, and learning not to let something visible define who you are.

I’m sharing my story because representation matters. Growing up, I rarely saw people whose bodies looked like mine or heard stories that reflected my experience. I hope sharing my story can help a child born with a nevus, a parent navigating an uncertain diagnosis, or an adult who has spent years feeling different know that they are not alone.

I have also experienced unwanted attention because of my appearance. I have been stopped at airports and asked to prove that my condition was not contagious. I have experienced strangers staring, pointing, and even taking pictures of me without my consent. Those experiences have made me realize how important awareness and understanding truly are.

Today, while undergoing treatment for melanoma, I have an even greater appreciation for the importance of awareness, research, early attention to changes, and a strong community.

My nevus has been with me my entire life. It has shaped parts of my story, but it has never defined the whole of who I am. By sharing my story, I hope to contribute to greater understanding of CMN and to a future where people living with it feel represented, supported, and seen.
