About CMN Ambassador - Katie

When I was born almost 50 years ago, I had a giant bathing trunk nevus and many satellite nevi. At the time, my parents were told to remove as much as possible so it would not “kill me.” I went through many surgeries and have been left with lots of scars along the way. 

For most of my life, when people asked about my skin, my response was a shy, “They’re just birthmarks.” For years, I struggled with how others perceived my skin and with feeling confident in my own uniqueness. 

A few years ago, I attended my first Nevus Outreach conference and finally found “my people.” Finding a community that understood my experiences was incredibly meaningful and helped me begin seeing my CMN in a different way. 

Today, I am working on being more confident in owning my CMN and embracing what makes me unique. Raising awareness is important to me because CMN is still a rare and often misunderstood condition. Greater awareness can help reduce delays in diagnosis and treatment, improve understanding among healthcare professionals, strengthen community support, and help advance research and treatment options. 

I want others living with CMN to know that they are not alone. Our differences are worth understanding, embracing, and celebrating.
