CMN Ambassador - Helen

Nevus Outreach / 2025 A-Team

CMN awareness is important to me because I want to be able to show people that having a CMN does not make you less capable, but instead adds a layer of strength and resilience, making Nevus owners valuable assets to any team.

About CMN Ambassador - Helen

Hi! My name is Helen Burgess (West) and I was born in North Carolina with a Bathing Trunk CMN.

From a very young age, my parents chose to raise me just like my two older sisters. Although I had faced 9 surgeries before I was 3 years old, I was very active growing up and involved in many sports including swimming and running. In both sports, my CMN was on full display in either bathing suits or running shorts, and my mom started calling it “my racing stripe.”

My parents taught me that my CMN was not something that held me back, but instead made me stronger and more resilient. From there, I chose to never hide my CMN and instead be proud of it and able to bring more awareness to CMNs when people asked me questions.

When I graduated high school, I was blessed to be able to attend the US Naval Academy and run Division l track and field there. I continued to work hard to achieve my goals to show others that a CMN was not a barrier to my dreams.

I graduated in May of 2024 with a Bachelors Degree in Oceanography and commissioned as an Ensign in the US Navy. I married my husband and fellow USNA graduate, Kevin, shortly after in June of 2024.

I still continue to proudly show off my “racing stripe” and bring awareness to CMNs. We recently welcomed our first child, Vincent, and I am excited to teach him about CMNs too!
