About CMN Ambassador - Emersyn
When Emersyn was born, the fear we felt was unbearable. The nurses and doctors had never seen anything like her and did not know what was wrong. She was transported by ambulance to Alberta Children’s Hospital NICU, more than an hour away from where I had delivered her.
Hearing comments from the healthcare team like, “We have never seen anything like this,” made an already frightening experience even more terrifying. We were suddenly trying to understand Giant Congenital Melanocytic Nevus and everything that came with it.
After doing a lot of my own research, I found Nevus Outreach. Finding this community changed my life. It gave me hope and, most importantly, the feeling that we were not doing this alone.
Emersyn is now five years old and has GCMN and NCM. Raising awareness has become a mission for me because I never want another mother or another person affected by CMN to feel as scared and hopeless as I felt when my daughter was born.
Because CMN is a visible difference, I want people to understand it, embrace it, and see the person beyond their skin. I want to help make a difference, even if it is for just one person. We all need to support and help each other.
Having a visible difference doesn't make you less capable. It makes you rare, not less capable. I want Emersyn and every person with CMN to grow up knowing that they are worthy, capable, and deserving of acceptance.
